Enclosed vs open 3D printers: what the enclosure changes

An enclosed 3D printer prints in warm, still air; an open-frame printer prints in room air. The enclosure matters for ABS, ASA, polycarbonate and nylon, not for PLA, PETG or TPU, and it costs more: a $549 median launch price against $399 for open-frame printers.

An enclosed 3D printer prints inside a closed box with a door and a lid, so the part cools in warm, still air. An open-frame printer has no box, so the part cools in room air. The enclosure matters for filaments that shrink and warp as they cool: ABS, ASA, polycarbonate (PC) and nylon (PA). PLA, PETG and TPU do not need one.

An enclosure also costs more. Of the 56 shipping printers in the database, the open-frame ones launched at a median of $399, the passive enclosed ones at $549 and those with a heated chamber at $1,049. The table at the end of the page lists all 56 from the cheapest launch price up, with each one’s enclosure, chamber rating and filtration.

What is an enclosed 3D printer?

An enclosed 3D printer has walls, a door and a lid around its build area, so the part prints in air warmed by the bed and hotend instead of room air. Some models add a chamber heater and an air filter. The database lists 25 shipping enclosed printers: 13 with a passive enclosure and 12 with a heated chamber.

The box does three jobs:

  • Holds heat. Warm air slows the cooling that makes ABS, ASA, PC and nylon warp off the bed and split between layers.
  • Blocks drafts. Moving room air never reaches the part.
  • Contains fumes. Fumes stay in the box, and on models with a filter a fan draws the chamber air through the filter media.

Spec sheets split enclosed printers in two. A passive enclosure, such as the one on the Bambu Lab P1S, is warmed only by the bed and hotend. An actively heated chamber has its own heater: the Flashforge Creator 5 Pro heats its chamber to 65 °C.

The heated chamber guide explains how makers rate chambers, and the chamber temperature list sorts every enclosed printer by its stated rating. The enclosed 3D printers list shows all 25 shipping models.

What is the difference between an enclosed and an open-frame 3D printer?

The difference is the air around the part. An open-frame printer leaves the part exposed to room air and drafts. An enclosed printer traps the heat of its bed and hotend behind walls and a door, and some add a chamber heater. That warm air slows the cooling that warps ABS, ASA, nylon and PC.

How the three classes compare across the shipping printers in the database:

Open frame Enclosed (passive) Actively heated chamber
Shipping printers 31 13 12
Cheapest launch price $199 $299.99 $499
Median launch price $399 $549 $1,049
CoreXY motion system 8 of 31 11 of 13 12 of 12
Filter media fitted as standard None 7 of 13 10 of 12
Stated maximum chamber temperature None 4 of 13, at 50 to 60 °C 12 of 12, at 60 to 65 °C

The cheapest are the Creality Ender-3 V3 SE (open frame), the Elegoo Centauri Carbon (enclosed) and the QIDI Q2 (heated chamber). Three open-frame printers have no recorded launch price and are left out of the price rows.

Bedslinger vs enclosed: 23 of the 25 shipping enclosed printers are CoreXY, while 19 of the 31 open-frame printers are bedslingers. A bedslinger moves its bed front to back, so a box around it has to hold the bed’s full travel. A CoreXY printer moves the toolhead on two belts, and its bed only moves down. The two exceptions are the FLSUN S1 Pro (a delta) and the Snapmaker Artisan (a bedslinger). The enclosed CoreXY list covers the rest.

Do I need an enclosed 3D printer?

You need an enclosed 3D printer if you plan to print ABS, ASA or polycarbonate, and Bambu Lab lists one for nylon too. PLA, PETG and TPU print on an open frame. Bambu Lab’s filament guide says the first group needs “higher heatbed and chamber temperatures to suppress warping and layer separation” and lists an enclosed printer for that group.

Two conditions shift that line:

  • PETG in a cold room. Bambu Lab recommends an enclosed printer for PETG “to prevent low ambient temperatures from reducing the model’s interlayer strength.”
  • Small ABS parts. Prusa Research’s ABS guide says the printer should be inside an enclosure. As a simple alternative, it offers PrusaSlicer’s draft shield, which keeps the model “slightly warmer.”

The materials guide covers each filament. The ABS and ASA list, nylon list and polycarbonate list then filter the shipping printers by the bed, hotend and nozzle each filament needs.

Is an enclosed or open 3D printer better?

Neither is better in general. Which one fits depends on the filaments you plan to print. Bambu Lab’s filament guide lists an enclosed printer for ABS, ASA, PC and nylon. For PLA, PETG and TPU it lists either type. The enclosure costs more: passive enclosed printers launched at a $549 median, open-frame ones at $399.

The trade-offs, as the makers and the records state them:

  • Materials. The open Elegoo Centauri 2 and the enclosed Centauri Carbon 2 share a 256 mm build cube, a 350 °C hotend and a 110 °C bed. Elegoo’s spec sheet lists ABS, ASA, PC and nylon as “Not Recommended” on the first and as supported on the second.
  • Price. The cheapest enclosed printer launched at $299.99 and the cheapest open frame at $199. A heated chamber starts at $499.
  • PLA in a closed box. Bambu Lab warns that chamber heat can deform PLA and TPU inside the extruder and clog it, since both soften below 60 °C. When the bed runs above 45 °C, it recommends opening the front door or removing the top glass cover.
  • Fumes. An enclosure holds fumes in the chamber, and 17 of the 25 shipping enclosed printers fit carbon or HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter media as standard. An open frame lets them into the room. Prusa’s ABS guide calls for good ventilation as well. The filtration guide covers what each filter type catches.
  • Size and access. The enclosure need not add size. Elegoo lists the Centauri 2 and Centauri Carbon 2 at the same 398 × 404 × 490 mm, though the enclosed one weighs 17.5 kg to the open one’s 13.7 kg. You reach the part through a door or lid rather than from any side.

Why are enclosed printers more expensive?

Enclosed printers carry more parts: walls, a door and a lid. Most add chamber fans and a filter, and some a heater. In three of four families the database holds in open and enclosed versions of one build volume, the enclosed model launched $100 to $150 higher: Elegoo’s open Centauri 2 at $299, the enclosed Centauri Carbon 2 at $399.

Families sold in two versions with the same build volume, at launch:

Family Lower version Higher version Gap What the higher version adds, per the records
Elegoo Centauri Centauri (open, discontinued), $199.99 Centauri Carbon (enclosed), $299.99 $100 Enclosure, air filter, camera, 110 °C bed (100 °C on the Centauri)
Elegoo Centauri 2 Centauri 2 (open), $299 Centauri Carbon 2 (enclosed), $399 $100 Enclosure, HEPA and activated carbon filter, camera
Flashforge Creator 5 Creator 5 (open), $799 Creator 5 Pro (heated chamber), $949 $150 Enclosure, 65 °C chamber heater, HEPA and activated carbon filter
QIDI Q2 Q2C (passive enclosure), $399 Q2 (heated chamber), $499 $100 65 °C chamber heater, activated carbon, HEPA and pre-filter, camera

Bambu Lab’s P1 series is the exception. The open P1P and the enclosed P1S both launched at $699, seven months apart. Tom’s Hardware reported that the P1S launch cut the P1P to $599. Bambu Lab also sold a $150 kit of panels, a glass door, a top cover and cabin fans that turned a P1P into a P1S, which prices the enclosure’s parts on their own.

Some pairs also differ in firmware and launch date, so compare the full records. The wider gaps between the class medians in the comparison table also come from motion system, size and features, not the enclosure alone.
