3D printers for polycarbonate: enclosed models with the bed and hotend PC needs

Twenty-three shipping enclosed printers reach the 280 °C hotend and 110 °C bed that polycarbonate filament makers list. Twelve have an actively heated chamber, the cheapest being the QIDI Q2 at $499; the cheapest of all is the Elegoo Centauri Carbon at $299.99.

A 3D printer for polycarbonate (PC) needs a hotend rated to 280 °C, a bed rated to 110 °C and an enclosure. Twenty-three shipping printers in the database meet all three, and twelve of them have an actively heated chamber. The cheapest by launch price is the Elegoo Centauri Carbon at $299.99; with a heated chamber, it is the QIDI Q2 at $499.

Those lines come from the filament makers. Bambu Lab’s PC datasheet lists a 260 to 280 °C nozzle, a 90 to 110 °C bed and a 45 to 60 °C chamber. Prusa Research lists 275 ±10 °C and 110 ±10 °C for Prusament PC Blend, and Polymaker lists 250 to 270 °C and 90 to 105 °C for PolyLite PC. This list uses the upper end of Bambu Lab’s ranges, which also covers Prusa’s 275 °C and 110 °C and Polymaker’s 270 °C and 105 °C.

Plain PC needs no hardened nozzle. Bambu Lab’s filament guide marks one “Not Required” for PC, and Prusa recommends a 0.4 mm brass nozzle for PC Blend.

Prusa says pure polycarbonate “is not suitable for 3D printing” because of bad surface adhesion and significant thermal expansion. Makers usually blend in additives to fix that, and Prusament PC Blend is one such filament.

The table sorts by maximum chamber temperature, highest first. The ten printers rated 65 °C at the top all have chamber heaters, and printers with no published chamber figure come last. Temperatures are the makers’ stated maximums, a dash means no published figure, and prices are US launch figures for the base configuration.

What 3D printer can print polycarbonate?

Any printer with a hotend rated to 280 °C, a bed rated to 110 °C and an enclosure can print polycarbonate, on the filament makers’ figures. Twenty-three shipping printers in the database qualify. Twelve have an actively heated chamber, from the QIDI Q2 at $499 to the Bambu Lab H2D Pro at $3,799. Eleven are passive enclosures.

By chamber rating:

Two shipping enclosed printers miss the bed line: the Bambu Lab P1S and the Creality K2, whose beds stop at 100 °C. That figure sits inside Bambu Lab’s 90 to 110 °C datasheet range, and the company’s filament guide names the P1S among its enclosed printers for PC. It is still 10 °C short of Prusa’s 110 °C.

No enclosed printer fails the hotend line. The lowest maximum, 290 °C on the two Prusa CORE One models, still clears 280 °C.

Prusa’s knowledge base also raises the bed to 115 °C after the first layer. Five printers here stop at 110 °C: the Bambu Lab P2S, the Creality K2 Pro, both Elegoo Centauri Carbon models and the Snapmaker Artisan.

Check the stock build plate too. Prusa does not suggest PC on a smooth polyetherimide (PEI) sheet because PC’s grip can damage the surface. If you must, it says to put down glue stick as a separation layer. Bambu Lab’s PC datasheet pairs glue with its engineering, high-temperature or textured PEI plates.

What is the cheapest 3D printer for polycarbonate?

The cheapest 3D printer for polycarbonate by launch price is the Elegoo Centauri Carbon, at $299.99. It is enclosed, with a 320 °C hotend and 110 °C bed, but has no chamber heater. The lowest-priced printer with an actively heated chamber is the QIDI Q2 at $499, rated for 65 °C, with a 370 °C hotend.

Next by launch price come the Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 and QIDI Q2C at $399, the QIDI Q2 and Sovol Zero at $499, and the Anycubic Kobra S1 and Bambu Lab P2S at $549. After the QIDI Q2, the next heated-chamber printers by price are the Bambu Lab X2D at $649, the QIDI Plus5 at $749 and the Creality K2 Pro at $849.

Street prices move after launch. The enclosed printers under $600 list compares the low end on filtration as well.

Do you need a heated chamber to print polycarbonate?

Not for every PC part. Prusa Research recommends an enclosure, mainly for large PC Blend models, and gives no chamber temperature. Bambu Lab’s PC datasheet lists a 45 to 60 °C chamber. Polymaker calls an actively heated chamber of at least 60 °C “highly recommended” for PolyLite PC, and says large, dense parts “will require a heated chamber.”

What each maker says:

  • Bambu Lab marks its PC “Enclosure Printers Required” and not compatible with its A-series printers. On the Bambu Lab X1E, Bambu Studio turns a 60 °C chamber on by default for PC, and Bambu Lab says the hot chamber cuts warping on larger or denser models.
  • Prusa Research says “Printing inside an enclosure helps.” Without one, it suggests a tall skirt around the part to make “a microclimate with a slightly higher temperature around the model.” It also says polycarbonate “is not suitable for printing large objects covering the whole sheet.”
  • Polymaker lists an “enclosed printer that can trap heat” as required for PolyLite PC.

On these statements, an enclosure covers small PC parts and a heated chamber matters most for large, dense ones. All twelve heated-chamber printers in the table reach Polymaker’s 60 °C, and the cheapest is the QIDI Q2 at $499. Among passive enclosures, only the Prusa CORE One L+ is rated 60 °C. The heated chamber guide explains how active and passive ratings differ.

Ten shipping open-frame printers also reach 280 °C and 110 °C, among them the Original Prusa MK4S and Original Prusa XL+. Prusa lists PC Blend print profiles for the MK4S and XL. They are left out here because Bambu Lab and Polymaker list an enclosed printer for PC. The enclosed vs open printers hub covers that choice for other materials.
