3D printer build volume: what it means and every printer compared

Build volume is the biggest part a printer can make in one piece. This topic gathers the size, bed and large-format pages, with every shipping printer's build volume below, largest first.

A 3D printer’s build volume is the largest box its nozzle can reach, stated as X × Y × Z in millimeters: width × depth × height. Across the 56 shipping printers in the database it runs from 152.4 × 152.4 × 152.5 mm on the Sovol Zero to 800 × 800 × 1000 mm on the Elegoo OrangeStorm Giga. The most common size is a 256 mm (10.1 in) cube.

What is 3D printer build volume?

Build volume is the space a printer can deposit plastic into, so it sets the largest part you can print in one piece. Makers state it as X × Y × Z in millimeters: width, depth and height. A part must fit inside that box as it sits on the bed.

Volume in liters (X × Y × Z ÷ 1,000,000) turns the box into one comparable figure. Delta printers have a round bed, so their build volume is a cylinder, written as diameter × height: the FLSUN V400 Max is Ø500 × 550 mm, about 108 liters. Build volume is the printer’s reach, not the machine’s size: the overall dimensions guide covers the footprint.

How do 3D printer build volumes compare?

Grouped by the shorter side of the bed, the 56 shipping printers in the database fall into three classes: 2 compact (under 200 mm), 29 mainstream (210 to 270 mm) and 25 large format (300 mm and up). The most common size is the 256 × 256 × 256 mm cube, shared by 8 printers.

  • Compact. The Sovol Zero (3.5 liters) and the Bambu Lab A1 mini, a 180 mm cube (5.8 liters).
  • Mainstream. Bed sides from 210 mm on the Original Prusa MK4S (11.6 liters) to 270 mm on the Snapmaker U1, a 270 mm cube (19.7 liters).
  • Large format. From the 300 mm cube of the Creality K1 Max (27 liters) to the Sovol SV08 Max at 500 × 500 × 500 mm (125 liters) and the OrangeStorm Giga (640 liters).

Volume grows with the cube of the side: a 300 mm cube holds about 1.6 times a 256 mm cube. The size classes guide and the standard bed sizes guide go class by class. The large-format list has every bed of 300 mm or more.

How do you read a build volume spec?

Read the headline as width × depth × height in millimeters, then read the footnotes. That figure is the machine’s maximum reach. Footnotes mark where a part loses some of it: a software height limit, the smaller area two nozzles share, or hardware in the print area. The plate itself can also measure more than the printable area.

  • Axis order. The Original Prusa MK4S is 250 × 210 × 220 mm, so its bed is 210 mm front to back and its parts can be 220 mm tall. The shorter bed side limits a wide, flat part.
  • Dual nozzles. The Bambu Lab H2D is listed at 325 × 320 × 325 mm. Bambu Lab’s wiki gives 300 × 320 × 320 mm as the space both nozzles reach: the limit for any part printed with both nozzles.
  • Software limits. The Bambu Lab P1S is 256 mm tall, but Bambu Lab notes that Bambu Studio sets the default printable height to 250 mm “to prevent heatbed damage.”
  • Plate vs. printable area. Elegoo builds the OrangeStorm Giga’s platform from four 410 × 410 mm plates, 820 × 820 mm in total. The printable area is 800 × 800 mm.
  • Round beds. A square part on a delta must fit inside the circle. On the Ø320 mm bed of the FLSUN S1 Pro, the largest square is about 226 mm per side (320 ÷ √2).
