Refurbished is not a regulated term. One seller uses it for a returned printer that was rebuilt and carries a two-year warranty. Another uses it for a unit that was cleaned and comes with three months of cover. Elegoo’s US store sells returns as “pre-owned” and says plainly they are not refurbished. The tables below set out what each US program promises, in its own words, as checked on October 6, 2026.
What does refurbished mean on a 3D printer?
A refurbished 3D printer is a returned, demo or previously owned unit that a manufacturer, retailer or approved refurbisher has tested, repaired where needed and cleaned before resale. What that covers depends on the seller. Bambu Lab, Anycubic and Micro Center describe repair and testing. Flashforge describes inspection, cleaning and testing.
Every refurbished program below includes a functional test and written cover, either a warranty or a return guarantee. Elegoo’s pre-owned stock has neither.
Cosmetics are where the programs differ. Micro Center says cosmetic defects may be present. Anycubic sells three condition grades: Excellent, Good and Acceptable. Amazon Renewed and eBay Refurbished each define four grades of their own.
What is the difference between a refurbished and a used 3D printer?
A refurbished 3D printer has been tested, repaired where needed and cleaned by the manufacturer or a named refurbisher, then resold with a written warranty and a return window. A used printer is sold as it is, usually by its owner. You get the seller’s word on its condition and, unless the platform adds one, no warranty.
The line is not always where the label puts it. Elegoo’s US store sells returned printers in four conditions (Open Box, Good Used, Damaged for fix up and Damaged) and calls them “returned items, NOT REFURBISHED.” Elegoo states those pre-owned machines carry no warranty and cannot be returned. Micro Center goes the other way. Its refurbished Bambu Lab units include customer returns, open-box stock and store demo displays, all reconditioned by its own technicians.
For printers bought from an owner, see where to buy a used 3D printer and the used 3D printer inspection checklist.
Which manufacturers sell refurbished 3D printers in the US?
Bambu Lab, Anycubic and Flashforge each run a refurbished section on their US stores, and Elegoo sells returned units as “pre-owned,” not refurbished. We found no refurbished printer section on the US stores of Creality, QIDI or Prusa Research. Prusa’s used goods category lists parts, not complete printers.

What do Amazon, eBay and Micro Center mean by refurbished?
Amazon Renewed, eBay Refurbished and Micro Center’s refurbished stock all promise a tested printer, but different people do the work. Amazon relies on qualified suppliers, eBay on the brand or vetted sellers, and Micro Center on its own technicians. Return windows run from 15 days at Micro Center to a year on Amazon Renewed Premium.

Two details matter more on these platforms than on a maker’s own store. On Amazon, the guarantee and warranty are listed per item, so read the product page before you buy. On eBay, the terms above apply only to listings in the eBay Refurbished program, under one of its four refurbished conditions. A listing in any other condition, such as used, does not carry them.
Are refurbished 3D printers good?
A refurbished 3D printer can be as dependable as a new one when three conditions hold. The manufacturer or a named refurbisher tested and repaired it. A written warranty covers it, ideally for a year or more. The return window gives you time to run real prints. Without those, it is a used printer with a different label.
Each condition maps to a column in the tables above:
- Who refurbished it. A maker’s own program or eBay’s Certified tier puts the brand behind the work. A third-party refurbisher may be just as careful, but you rely on that business’s process instead.
- The warranty. Terms run from none (Elegoo pre-owned) through three months (Flashforge) to two years (Bambu Lab and eBay Certified). Check who services it. On eBay, claims go to Allstate, not the printer maker.
- The return window. A window of 7 to 15 days leaves room for one or two long test prints. A window of 30 days or more covers several weeks of normal use.
Whether a given unit is “safe to buy” also depends on the model. A refurbished printer has the same specs as a new one, so compare its record in the printer database against what you plan to print before the discount decides for you.
What should you check before buying a refurbished 3D printer?
Check five things before paying. Find out who refurbished the unit. Read the warranty length and who services it. Note the return window and who pays return shipping. Look at the condition grade and what accessories come with it. Then confirm the model’s specs fit what you plan to print, because a discount does not change them.
- The refurbisher. Look for the brand’s own store, eBay’s Certified tier, or a named retailer such as Micro Center. On Amazon, the supplier is named on the product page.
- Warranty length and provider. Read it on the listing, not the brand’s general warranty page. Flashforge, for example, gives refurbished units 3 months against 12 months for new printers.
- Return window and shipping. Anycubic and Flashforge charge return shipping to the buyer on non-quality returns. eBay Refurbished returns are free within 30 days, with exceptions.
- Condition grade and accessories. Anycubic gives every grade the same 1-year warranty. eBay does not: its Certified tier carries 2 years and the other three tiers 1 year. Micro Center notes that original accessories may not be included.
- Account and data. Networked printers can be tied to an owner’s cloud account. Anycubic lists data removal and account unlinking as a step in its refurbishment process. Elsewhere, confirm the printer is unbound before your return window closes.
A full hands-on check of a unit, including what to print first, is in the used 3D printer inspection checklist.
